THE BEST CANDIDATE

It is a common correction in plastic surgery either as an isolated procedure or associated with other surgeries such as a rhinoplasty. The lack of definition of a chin can seriously impact the harmony of facial proportions. The ease with which we can change this feature, means that its reshaping is increasingly in demand. For those cases in which there is a “lack” or absence of chin, we can perform an AUGMENTATION MENTOPLASTY through a simple intervention, inserting a prosthesis of silicone or other suitable material. To insert this prosthesis, a small incision is made in the groove between the lower lip and the gum in order to create a cavity.

THE INTERVENTION

It is performed as an outpatient procedure - without admission – and takes some 30 minutes. Local anaesthetic is generally used, however, depending on the preferences of the patient and the surgeon and whether it is a more extensive surgery as a whole, general anaesthetic may be used. The scar, remaining within the mouth, will not be visible. Depending on the case, surgeons may prefer to introduce the chin prostheses through an incision in the skin under the chin. If this procedure is used, the scar is barely visible after a few months.

IS THERE AN ALTERNATIVE TREATMENT TO THE IMPLANT?

There is the possibility of extending the chin through an injection of composites (derived from hyaluronic acid). It is a simple procedure – lasting 10 minutes – much recommended in minimal or moderate augmentations. The effect achieved is not permanent (a year and a half), but is often of great use for getting an idea of how future surgery may turn out.
Another much used alternative is LIPOSTRUCTURE. It consists of auto-transplanting the patients own fat to project the chin area, correct small irregularities, or as a combined treatment of the perioral area. The effect achieved is long-lasting, and indistinguishable to the touch from the natural chin.

AND IF MY PROBLEM IS EXCESSIVE CHIN?

Similarly a reduction mentoplasty can be performed. The objective is to retract the chin. By so doing the impact on facial harmony of an excessively prominent chin can be softened.

WHAT IS POST-OPERATIVE RECOVERY LIKE?

A certain degree of discomfort and swelling tends to be experienced in the area affected for several days and certain fleeting difficulty is normally experienced when it comes to smiling or speaking. Bruises may appear around the chin and neck but the patient will recover his or her normal appearance within 2 to 4 weeks. The surgeon will explain about dental hygiene and the diet to follow, together with any post-operative restrictions.

THE RESULTS

The results cannot be fully evaluated until after several weeks, or even months. In the majority of cases the patient will be perceived to have a better appearance and the fact that the patient has undergone a surgical procedure will be imperceptible.
